Caitlin Murray Black Lacquer Design Founder & Creative Director

CAITLIN MURRAY

Founder & Creative Director

Forever an enthusiast for artful living, Caitlin’s eclectic yet polished technique manifests modern sensibilities and pays homage to distinctive design from decades past.

Ten years ago, Caitlin launched Black Lacquer Design as an ode to high style and soulful aesthetics, delivered with real-world accessibility. As creative director and lead designer, she spearheads a talented crew of collaborators, artists, and tradespeople.

Caitlin’s candid sense of color has earned her a reputation in the industry for distinctively daring interiors with equal parts whimsical irreverence and tailored refinement. A born synesthete, Caitlin’s uncanny perception of chroma, form, space, and texture is at the heart of all her work. Though every project inspires an entirely unique concept, each of her interiors feels simultaneously playful, glamorous, and cozy. With her approachable and unpretentious perspective, she makes the whole design practice feel kind of effortless.

Caitlin has starred in several programs across various television networks, including Bravo’s Best Room Wins (spoiler: she wins), Magnolia Network’s A Designer Profile, HGTV’s House Hunters Renovation, NBC’s Open House, and has been featured in numerous top editorials (Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Architectural Digest, Luxe, Domino, Rue, Dwell).

Caitlin spent her childhood in Indianapolis, IN, fostering an early obsession with objects and a precocious knack for arranging them, ultimately evolving into an adoration of all things interiors. She presently divides her time between Los Angeles, CA, and Kansas City, MO, with her toddler son and their cocker spaniel, Color.

Laura Fairly

Designer & Director of Operations

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Laura is casual and easygoing while still meticulous in attending to the details. She’s been Caitlin’s right-hand gal the past eight years, working closely with her to ensure that every project is executed flawlessly. She is especially focused on the place where badass, beautiful and bananas design ideas meet real-world parameters, and sees almost all project limitations as creative opportunities. She received her B.A. in English from U.C. Berkeley and has over a decade of experience driving projects and communications. The daughter of a furniture designer, interior design was a natural extension of her inherited interest in furniture fabrication and restoration. If she isn’t in the office, you can find her hanging with her family or cozying up with a book. Rest assured, though, she definitely won’t be cooking you anything.

Elsie Garcia

PROCUREMENT MANAGER & Studio Coordinator

Our resident woman of oh-so-many hats, Elsie manages all aspects of purchasing and construction documentation. She’s been with the firm for over five years and oversees every furnishing, material, and accessory from the moment it’s specified until it’s expertly installed, working closely with our FF&E suppliers, fabricators, and craftsman to ensure that no detail is missed throughout the production process. An L.A. native, she has over ten years of experience in the city coordinating production for major manufacturing companies in her back pocket, and brings her impeccable diligence and no-stone-left-unturned thinking to our studio, always with a smile and infectiously bubbly attitude. With her conscientious management of Black Lacquer Design, she has quickly turned us into a greener, more efficient firm able to quickly mobilize a team of trusted partners to often accomplish the seemingly impossible. When she’s not coordinating for our team, she’s either gardening, salsa dancing, or thrifting.
